I used to live by the old maxim "I'll sleep when I'm dead." While keeping up with 2 active kids, a demanding law career, and enjoying time with family and friends, I didn’t have much time to prioritize sleep.
I used to start my mornings with a run or workout class at 5am before racing home to get the rest of my family up and out the door for the day. After a long workday, I’d come home to fix dinner and spend some time with the kids, navigate nighttime routines, and work some more. The next day I’d wake up and do it all over again…sound familiar?
Eventually, I made the decision to trade my full-time law career to pursue something greater. At the time, I wasn’t quite certain of what “something greater” looked like, but was fueled by my passions for health, wellness, and being more present in my daily life.
With a little more time to breathe and slow down, I noticed I was able to sleep more. I was already feeling like a better version of myself. Noting this experience and doing a little more research on sleep, my perspective completely changed from the former ideal, “I’ll sleep when I’m dead.” The days of deliberately depriving myself of sleep and being proud of the 5 hours I managed to squeeze in were over.
Sleep is perhaps the most fundamental and overlooked element of managing a healthy lifestyle. While it’s right next to needing to eat, drink, and reproduce, many of us struggle to prioritize sleep. There isn’t one major organ in the body or process within the brain that isn’t optimally enhanced by sleep and impaired when we don’t get enough.
Sleep impacts our ability to learn, memorize, and make logical decisions. It recalibrates our emotional brain circuits, allowing us to manage social and psychological challenges with composure. Sleep boosts our immune system, preventing infection and warding off all manner of sickness. It regulates our appetite and maintains a diverse microbiome within our guts.
The list of benefits of getting enough sleep go on and on, but the universal message remains the same: It’s the single most effective thing we can do each day to reset the health of our brains and bodies. On particularly hectic days when winding down seems nearly impossible, I’ve immensely benefited from adding Shift Delta 8 Chocolate to my nighttime routine.
We all need to embrace a full night’s sleep or afternoon nap to utilize this powerful elixir of wellness and vitality. What can you do today to ensure you’re making more time for sleep?
May you be happy, may you be healthy, and may your world be filled with love and gratitude.
